Everything Under * Daisy Johnson

It's been sixteen years since Gretel last saw her mother, half a lifetime to forget her childhood on the canals.

But a phone call will soon reunite them, and bring those wild years flooding back: the secret language that she and her mother invented; the strange boy, Marcus, living on the boat that final winter; the creature said to be underwater, swimming ever closer.

In the end there will be nothing for Gretel to do but wade deeper into their past, where family secrets and ages prophecies will all come tragically alive again.

Gretel knows how to light a fire, skin animals, make wind chimes and how to steer a boat.

What she doesn't know is, how to commerce with people, how to live on her own or where her mother went.

Her estranged, beautiful, wonderful, secretive mother. The one who would tell her stories of the creature in the murk, who would cook breakfast for her in the morning then let her camp out under the stars at night. Gretel was seven years old when she left her, not once did her mother look back, not even for the strange boy who went missing.

Now an adult and on a mission to find her mother and bring her home, Gretel must navigate her way through society and deeper into her past than ever before. She must go back to The River, The Hut and The Cottage whilst speaking to people she never knew existed. Before it's too late and her fears consume her.

Everything Under by Daisy Johnson, is her second novel and I will most certainly be heading out to buy her first.

I'll be honest, when I started reading the book I was thinking on just not finishing it, I was going to do the 'first fifty pages' and then put it aside, though I'm so happy that I reached that fifty page mark.

This has easily become one of my favourite reads so far of 2019, I am quite surprised that I enjoyed it so much. The writing style is extremely clever, the storyline is beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. I noticed whilst reading that the book itself is set out into three sections, however, you could quite easily read said sections in their own little way and it would still flow beautifully.

I loved Gretel's character so much; strong, resilient and will not give up no matter what. The characters themselves are wonderfully unique, as is the story and I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I felt the book itself was a lot deeper than possibly intended, with themes of anxiety and depression, which was something that I admired.

If you have to read a new book this year, let it be this wonderful, clever read. You won't be disappointed.

I will be giving this book 10 out of 10

The Art of Taxidermy * Sharon Kernot

Lottie collects dead creatures and lovingly cares for them, hoping to preserve them, to save them from disintegration.

Her father understands—Lottie has a scientific mind, he thinks. Her aunt wants it to stop, and she goes to cruel lengths to make sure it does.

Little Lottie is at a loss without her Mother and Sister by her side. Stricken with grief, Lottie starts to find more creative ways to help ease her pain and memories, though not everyone in the family is keen on her new creative streak.

This wonderful book is written in verse and is based around the 1980's. It's the first type of verse book that I have read, it did not disappoint.

The story focuses around Lottie, who is silently struggling with the loss of her mother and older sister Annie, the book flits between the past and present whilst giving a glimpse at what her family were like when they were still alive.

As Lottie begins to have a fascination with Taxidermy, family members try everything in their power to make the little girl she should be and not the girl Lottie wants to be.  The writing and story telling itself is in a way that I would say beautifully morbid, there's a love and sadness that grows within the book and the use of imagery is beautiful.

I felt for Lottie as her family couldn't see what she was trying to do. It showed how each character portrayed different stages of grief and how they deal with their own sadness and loss which was a very interesting interpretation.

The Art of Taxidermy by Sharon Kernot is a tremendous read and I can't wait for more of her work to follow. Without giving too much away, I thoroughly enjoyed this book more than I thought I would and I would highly recommend. Also, can I just point out that the cover works is absolutely
gorgeous and  big thanks to NetGalley and Text Publishing for the ARC. However, if you are squeamish towards certain animal natures, then I would advise you to tread lightly.

I will be giving this book a 9 out of 10

The book will be released in the UK by Text Publishing Company on the 23rd August 2019 and I would strongly suggest picking it up.

Three seconds To Midnight * Clarifications (Wattpad review)

Three Seconds To Midnight by Clarifications

In which Death answers the questions of the dead and discovers himself along the way.

Have you ever wondered what conversations went on with death and the people he meets along the way? Ever thought what it would be like to pass judgement onto people and their doings in life or thought what Mr. Reaper might say?

Then read this book, don't just take a glance at it read it.

Throughout history, things have happened there has been the devastating Holocaust, people on Death Row, children being killed or taking their lives and people dying in general for the sake of being somewhere in the wrong moment at the wrong time.

Follow death as he has very in depth conversations with children who have died for no reason, horrible nasty people who hate everything and wish to know why they aren't going to Heaven and why Death has to make his mind up on where to send these people on their merry way. And why sometimes people need a good lesson or two on life, and that some just want to have one last chat before they go to the other side.

Three Seconds To Midnight by Clarifications, is a short story that I found on Wattled and man what a great app that is! Filled with loads and loads of different books and stories for free by very small authors with so much talent that need to be recognised and this is one of those authors.

I know this is a very short review and I couldn't really put much into it as it would give away the whole story, plus it's really short as stated. I actually started this book today and finished it within an hour! I just could not put it down!

The book is very very well written and it is well set out, it flows smoothly and is very intriguing  The book is very very deep I may warn you, it's a little bit dark but it's not bad as it is based on big parts in history so it has already happened, horrible things that have happened I may add.

I thought the book was very clever as since it's based in History, it's basically just Death having conversations with people who have died and how they may have reacted and how Death had to in some ways look after them or teach them a lesson or two. All the characters have been written wonderfully and Death's character is also quite funny as well as very smart and witty with a slap stick sense of humour, which is a nice twist.

In each character the writer has reflected on what they have done in the past to either make them die or how they died, each chapter starts with a little fact file about this person who has been admitted to Death, who will 'Judge' them on where they are going.

Although I am not religious myself, I find the book is lightly based around the bible and what Death would of said to some people, though reading this book and the responses he gave to some of the people I would totally agree with his response.

The book is really deep and does make you think about the world and the universe and how it works, and how if someone does exist why would half of this stuff, the bad stuff happen around the world. To me I think the book is lightly based on the Bible, but in some ways, it's not 'slamming' the Bible in anyway, nothing against the Bible, I think that it just questions what really exists and the existence of any other human life in the world up there in the sky and if that someone, something did exist, then as it is mentioned in the book, why would half of the people die and have to suffer?

I know I have waffled on a bit in this review, but I feel that if you're reviewing books, then you are allowed to have your view and say. After all, it's a creative hobby / activity to do / have and we should all be able to have our say on books and listen to other peoples opinions too.

Have you read this book? What did you think to it? If you haven't read this book I suggest you do as it is fantastically written and it has wonderful background and just creativeness towards it.  I think this book deserves way more recognition than what it has and should actually be in the shops! Also, the book which surprised me, was written by a thirteen year old, that just blew my mind! For the sake of how much thinking process has gone into it and how deep the book go's it really starts to get to you and to get you thinking on how the world actually works and in someways if anything that people in the past was worth it?

The author may not have meant it to be like that or how they are portraying their work, but to me that is how I see it, but it is a good way in which I see it. I just feel that we all need to open our eyes a bit more to what has/was and is going on around the world in the past and in the present now and what will be happening in the future, before it is too late?

After all, one of the things that was mentioned in the book was that the biggest feeling you get when you die is Regret. I feel that is such a big and powerful meaning and to say that a thirteen year old has written this and said this in a story, makes me think that everyone needs to stop and think about what is happening to our world.

I will give this book a wonderful 10 out of 10 as that is what I feel the book and the author deserves, well done! I was going to post this review as part of the 'Small Authors reviews' At the end of the month but just couldn't wait to post it and felt it needed to be reviewed asap.

I highly recommend this book.

Undertaking Love * kat French

Undertaking Love by Kat French

Sexy and smart, with an extremely desirable male lead, this a delightful debut from an exciting new new voice in women's fiction.

When Marla Jacobs discovers that the shop next door to her Little White Wedding Chapel is to become a funeral parlour, She declares an all-out war.

Funny, romantic and dangerously sexy.

Marla Jacobs is a highly functioning, strong independent woman and she knows what she wants. She's an American woman living in England running her own little wedding chapel, just like the ones back out in the States. Everything is going well for Marla, she has the job, the house, the family and friends and of course her loveable big dog Bluey.

So when she hears the news, that the new shop opening up next door to her beloved Little White Wedding Chapel, is not the Cupcake shop that she thought it would be. But is in fact a Funeral Parlour, things start to get a bit messy.

Gabriel Ryan is down on his luck, and after a death in the family, he moves away from Ireland to set up the funeral business somewhere else and follow in his fathers footsteps. He feels like he's got the luck on his side when he finds out Marla is his new neighbour, but all starts to turn sour as soon as she finds out who he is and what he is doing.

Marla won't be going down without a fight, she can see it before her eyes: Brides bumping into widows, bouquets being swapped for wreaths, and Limos being held up by hearses. Marla can't stand the thought and soon starts up a campaign to get Gabriel out of town and to take his parlour with him, but when it turns into a hate campaign, things start to get a bit out of hand.

It's all war when Ryan gets his hands into the situation too. Soon the couple are fighting against each other trying to win the votes over from the public, but when one of Marla's close friends does something unforgivable, will the pair start to iron out the creases in their relationship or will it heat things up more?

Sexy and Irish, Gabriel has a few tricks up his sleeves and is happy to get his hands dirty in the battle for the right of who's shop stays on the street. Even if it means grabbing Marla's friends behind her back.

Though she starts to see Gabriel in a different light, she starts to have other feelings for him How is she supposed to argue with him and claim her title of her shop being the only one on that road, when she just wants to jump into the shower with him?

Undertaking Love by Kat French is the first novel by the author, (although she has written other books under the name of 'Kitty French' which are under the Erotic category) is the first romantic novel the author has written, and I must say it is amazing!

I know that sounds a bit far fetched and you may just think that "well she thinks that about every book she reads" But I don't and I'm starting to be more strict on what I am reviewing. Though I can honestly say that I really enjoyed this book and wish to purchase it one day so I can read it again.

I borrowed it from the Library after reading the blurb and it sounding funny. I can tell you now that it is quite funny in places, rude, crude and downright dirty with foul play from both sides of the sex to get what they want. It's the perfect Love-hate relationship book and couldn't get any better.

One of the books where you're begging the characters to get together, even though they hate each other. But you know they will soon fall in love and everything will click into place. The story behind the book is great and the plot is brilliant. There's always something happening in the book as the story unfolds.

There are some shockers, tear jerkers, edge on the seat, infatuated love, frustration, anger and annoyance moments with all characters. In a way the book reminded me of the TV Stella, if I could describe the book as a TV show that's what it would be.

It is worth a read and I would recommend it to anyone! Get yourself a copy!

I will give this book 10 out of 10!

The Colour Of Magic * Terry Pratchett

The Colour Of Magic by Terry Pratchett

On a world supported on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown), a gleeful, explosive, wickedly eccentric expedition sets out. There's an avaricious buy inept wizard, a naive tourist whose luggage moves on hundreds of dear little legs, dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course THE EDGE of the planet...

In the far away galaxy, between thought and reality there is another world. Not just any old world, it's known as the Discworld. Different from our own round sphere. No, this is a flat disc, that sits upon four large elephants, where they stand upon the large turtle A'Turin, who glides through space.

Rincewind is a wizard, he has the cloak, the hat and the beard. Though he doesn't know any of the spells and he got kicked out of the Unseen University for Wizards. So life isn't pretty great for the worlds worst wizard, although he does know one of the most powerful spells in history, he just has trouble remembering it.
But when sat in the doom and gloom in a pub in Ankh Morpork, things slowly start to pick themselves up, piece by piece.

Twoflower is the first tourist to ever walk the land in Ankh Morpork and the civilians can't quite believe there eyes on what there seeing. Not just that the first tourist is currently stood on there land, but that fact that his luggage, which is a big wooden chest, is walking around on millions of tiny little feet with a mind of it's own. That, and it's carrying the weight of the world in gold inside the thing. With Rincewinds life in tatters and not much going for him, Twoflower makes him an offer he can't refuse.

With the pair teamed up together and making a mess of things, including Ankh Morpork. The pair set off on there own memorable adventure, creating havoc and mischief along to way. With riding dragons, ending up in the devils cave, befriending a barbarian and being captured by a princess. Things couldn't get much worse, not to mention trying to escape death himself and trying to find the edge of the disc.

Though all this starts to become a bit too much for Rincewind as the journey unfolds, he is passed from pillar to post in a series of unfortunate mishaps and "What's the worse that could happen?" moments. Join Rincewind and Twoflower as they start the adventure of a life time.

The Colour Of Magic by Terry Pratchett is the first book in the well known novel series Discworld and is by far one of the most imaginative and in-depth book I have ever read...so far. I've been wanting to read the Discworld series for a while now and after seeing some of the TV and film adaptations I really wanted to read the books. To say that I watch The Hogfather every year.

Though the book was a bit strange in the reading department for me. It started out really enjoyable and entertaining on how it starts in the middle of a disaster and how it goes back to the beginning to show you how it got to that moment and then carries on from there. I did like the imagination throughout the book and how it was just created, like the actual discworld itself and the life of Rincewind.

I really did like both characters of Rincewind and Twoflower. I loved how Rincewind was portrayed to find Twoflower annoying, but as the story went on he realised that he did need him and he kept him sane a little even when things got a bit too stressful. Twoflower is the most calmest character I have ever read and it made me want to be him as I'm never that calm!  To me, they became a good team and a great friendship blossomed between them even though they didn't get on at first. They decided to help each other out when needed and always came back for each other. Plus I loved the negativity from Rincewind and then the Positiveness from Twoflower.

Either way, I enjoyed this book and the Characters, though in some places I found the book repeating itself quite a bit and you could start to tell what was going to happen next within the book. Apart from that it was good, it's not stopped me from wanting to read more of his book of the series. It was highly funny in places also.

I will give this book 5 out of 10 stars.

Christine * Stephen King

Christine by Stephen King

Evil is alive in Libertyville. It inhabits a custom-painted red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury and the teenage boy, Arnold Cunningham, who buys it from the strange Roland LeBay.

Helped by Arnold's girlfriend Leigh Cabot, Dennis Guilder embarks to find out the real truth behind Christine and finds more than he bargained for: from murder, to suicide, and a strange feeling that surrounds Christine - she gets even with anyone that crosses her! Can Dennis save Arnold from the evil that is Christine?

This is a story that has only been told four times and this, making it's fourth and hopefully the last for Dennis Guilder. Arnie Cunningham is Dennis's best friend, and a bit of a loner. There always has to be at least one of them in the whole High School and Arnie was one of them.

Being constantly bullied throughout primary school all the way up to high school, Arnie Cunningham was used to it, so long as he had his best friend Dennis by his side, his wing man and Savior. Everything would be fine, that is until a drive home from work changed everything.

For Dennis Guilder, he knew it was bad luck, that something could go wrong when Arnie first set her eyes on her, making Dennis reverse back so Arnie could get another look of her splendid view. Her beautiful curves, the bight colour of her, the way she sat on the side of the road peaceful and content. Though all Dennis saw was a rusty pile of junk.

But Arnie saw through that and fell in love with a real beauty, a 1958 Plymouth Fury in cherry red and white, named Christine. Soon Arnie had got her up and running and working in perfect order. Her body was clean, smooth and Shiny. Free from scratches, rust and dents. Looking sleek and shine.
Until Buddy Repperton gets his hands on her and has his way alright, and soon Arnie is back to square one in the restoration process.

Much to the happiness of his mother and father, Arnold becomes besotted with the beast and never leaves it alone. Even his new girlfriend Leigh cannot coax him out of his dreamlike state with the car. To Dennis this is very out of the norm for his pal Arnie and he starts to seek questions about what really happened with that Plymouth and what power it holds. As Arnie starts to become the boy he has never known and becomes dark and sinister.

Dennis starts to see less and less of his best friend and more of his mates girlfriend instead. Soon both Dennis and Leigh cannot see Arnie anymore, but the face of a dead man, the face of man who sold the car to Arnie in the first place. The rotting corpse of a man, Ronald D. Lebay.

Soon after the change in Arine, a horrible pattern starts to rise as murders start piling up and so does the evidence around Arnold and his beloved Christine. Dennis and Leigh must work around the clock to find a way to get Arnie Cunningham back and to destroy the frightening Fury, before it's too late.

Christine by Stephen King, is the second book I have read by him so far. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. I must admit from time to time I did feel a bit that it dragged and that I didn't understand some parts (mainly the car parts and what not haha) But I did enjoy it none the less.

It had such an amazing story line and all the characters we're well written. I loved how Arnie was portrayed and how King manged to change his attitude in the character, Arnie turns into a nasty person, an evil person. And I think that he portrayed that change very well and the imagery it crated for me was amazing.

I loved Dennis's character even more. To the fact how you could see how his and Arnie's friendship was. I think he captured friendship quite well in this book and how certain things and little changes can make a big difference in the way friendship goes and also changes. I was so shocked throughout the book! There we're so many things that I was not expecting! And the ending, I was sat on the tram on the way to work and there was a massive shocker at the end, and I was sat there on the tram with my mouth over shocked and the lady sat across from me was just staring at me! Haha.

All in all it was a great book, despise some of the time that I didn't understand certain things, but loved it none the less. Would definitely re-read it again.

I will be giving this book an 8 out of 10

Drummer * Jan Page

Drummer by Jan Page

Liam tries to stay away from home as much as he can - especially if his dad's around.
Usually he just hangs out with his mates, skating. But today, Liam's had an idea: to form a band, with him on drums.

All he needs is a kit, so Liam heads for the local junk shop. But the owner, Weird Welly, freaks him out, hinting that something terrible is about to happen.

Something bad to do with the band.

Then the really weird stuff begins...

What if you could rewind and fast forward your life. To be able to see what your life would be like int he future, to be able to know what was exactly going to happen? Would you take that chance, or would you change time itself, just to save one life? Or maybe more.

For Liam Condie, this is exactly what happened. Yes, I know it's hard to believe.
He and his friends CJ and Daz get a crazy idea to start a band. They hardly know any instruments themselves, but they are determined to learn something and get some music created. There is only one slight problem, they will need to ask CJ's ex, Gemma, if they can use her house for a practise room. Which may result in her being in the band.

Liam decided he would be the drummer of the band, though there is another problem regarding a drum kit. He doesn't have one, yet alone how to play the instrument itself.
So stopping off at Weird Welly's Junk Shop, seems like a good idea. Well it was at the time, cause as soon as Liam enters the shop, Welly seems to know him from somewhere, and Liam just can't place his finger on it. Oh, Welly is weird alright.

Things aren't that great at home, Dad's got no job and practically lives at the pub down the street. And when he does come home, he argues with his mum and sometimes hits her if he has the chance, though it doesn't happen if Liam's there. Mum is constantly tired since looking after all the family and Liam's little sister Zoe. Life's just not good at home.

So when the band Salamander get their first gig at Scurvy Joe's, all is going great. Until during their performance, things  get rowdy and Liam ends up in a bad coma from a stage light crashing onto his head. Soon Liam in a world of his own with no one to talk to but Welly, being blasted into the past of 1986, the year he was born, Liam must find the reason why he is there, to stop his parents misery and to ask valuable questions that are on his mind. As the time is ticking, can he slightly change the past before it's too late?

Drummer by Jan Page is an excellent book, it's very well written and really enjoyable to read. I read this book some years back when I borrowed it from the Library, and decided that I needed a copy myself. I can understand why I liked it those years ago, as I still enjoyed reading it now, even though I knew what happened already.

The book is quick and simple, though it has so many twists and turns in it that would wouldn't even think of. This is the only book I have ready by Jan Page and I can tell you that I will be definitively reading more from her. The way this is written is so wonderful, there's so many different stories to each character and it's a really in depth book. It's worth the read!

I give this book 9 out of 10

The Replacement * Brenna Yovanoff

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

Mackie Doyle is the Replacement. Though he lives in the small town of Gentry, Mackie comes from a world of tunnels and black murky water, a world of living dead girls ruled by a little tattooed princess. He is a Replacement - left in the crib of a human bay sixteen years ago. Now, because of fatal allergies to iron, blood, and consecrated ground, Mackie is slowly dying in the human world.

Mackie would give up anything to live among us, to practise his bass guitar or spend time with an oddly intriguing girl called Tate. But when Tate's baby sister goes missing, Mackie is drawn irrevocably into the underworld of Gentry, known as Mayhem. He must face the dark creatures of the Slag Heaps and find his rightful place - in our world, or theirs.

Mackie Doyle is an average teenage boy that just wants to be a normal person and to be able to fit in. But life for Mackie isn't that easy since he's allergic to iron, blood and the cold damn ground. Pretty hard life to lead huh?
Since his sister Emma told him that he isn't her real brother, and was placed into the crib by a large man coming from the window, and her real brother was stolen. Mackie starts to think that there's something not right about him at all.

Gentry is a quiet little town where everyone is friendly, but they keep to themselves most of the time and try not to get up in each others business. But when Tate Stewart's baby sister Natalie goes missing, you would think all panic would break loose. When in reality, the little town see it as an everyday thing, and let it waver on by. Apart from Tate who thinks that something isn't right, and is pretty sure the baby they placed in the casket, was not her sister at all.

Soon Mackie is drawn to an underworld beneath Gentry that he thought never existed. With the place stinking like iron and filled with the undead, Mackie starts to question where he actually belongs when he finds out the truth about himself. Trying to save Tate's sister is going to be tough but, what isn't in life?

As Mackie starts to dig deeper (Literally) into the Slag Heaps and find out more disturbing stuff than he ever wanted to in his life, will he save Natalie Stewart or will she die as the clocks ticking towards the annual sacrifice of a child. What will happen? Who's side will Mackie Doyle end up on?

To be honest, I thought this book was okay. I thought it would be better judging by the cover and the summary on the back, but after a while it starts to get a little boring and repetitive.
For me at first, the book starts off at a great and interesting start. Then after a while it starts to loose it a bit and became too in depth with words, which just made it boring, and took too long to get to the point. Then it started to kick back upwards towards the end of the book and had an okay ending.

As much as I love books with more depth and describing than usual, I think this had too much. Don't get me wrong, the author Brenna Yovanoff chose some great words to use, which made reading it exciting in some places. But like I said, it was just too much in depth.
The characters were well written though, which was great. I also liked the really dark and Gothic side to the book, and also strangely the swearing, because you never get that much in a regular book.

All in all, I would recommend this book for young adults, or teens who are just starting to get into more in depth books. But if you're looking for a thriller or anything different, this book may not be for you.

In the end I would give this book 5 1/2 out of 10

Till next time,
Emma xx :)

Kissed By An Angel is a heartwarming love story about a young couple who fall deeply in love with each other. But there's a twist.
When Ivy and Tristan set off on a date together and soon turn out to be late to their reservations, Tristan starts up the car and drives towards the restaurant, though when he starts to go over the speed limit a little, he can't slow down and there's something wrong with the brakes. Causing an accident to occur.

As more strange deaths pop up in the sequence throughout the story, Ivy is drawn with who to believe and who to to be against, all deaths close to Gregory, she starts to wonder is he really is the nice, sweet step brother. Or a twisted phsyco who wants revenge.
Does Ivy take advice from Beth, her loving friend who always finds herself writing harlequin romances at ever hour of the day. About what is happening, due to the dreams and visions she See's or does she just wave them by and doesn't do anything. But when Ivy forgets about them, they come back to haunt her, but there not just dreams anymore. There the real thing.

But soon Tristan realizes that it wasn't a car malfunction with his brakes, someone had tampered with them. Tristan soon finds pieces to the puzzle that he needs to fix and with the help of Lacey, Ivy, Beth and Will they may find the reason for all these deaths.

Including Tristan's.

Kissed By An Angel is an amazing story that I found wonderful. It had me on the edge of my seat every time I read it. The story itself was very creative and full of different feelings, I found myself laughing, smiling, sighing, crying and even scared at once point in the book. I think that Elizabeth Chandler has wrote this book wonderfully, full of romance and passion but also with a twist full of fright and puzzlement. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and you wont be able to put the book down or stop turning pages. The book has a wonderful and beautiful ending. Read it, you won't be disappointed! (P.s:: Sorry if this book review wasn't that great today)
